Blue Hens Advance to Tenth Straight CAA Field Hockey Championship

NEWARK, Del. – The No. 2 seed Delaware field hockey (8-11) advances to its 10th straight Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Championship game with a win over No. 3 seed Northeastern (5-14) 6-1 on Friday at Rullo Stadium.
With the win, the Blue Hens will face No. 4 seed Drexel in the CAA Tournament Championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium. The Dragon defeated top-seeded Monmouth 3-1 in the CAA Semifinals.
"So proud of our team and staff. As coaches, we knew the Blue Hens could play some great hockey and although we showed moments of it during our regular season games, we weren't able to put four consistent quarters together until today," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said. "Every quarter versus Northeastern, we further elevated our work-rate and team play, allowing us to become more dominate throughout the game on both sides of the ball. It was a true team effort and performance which will allow us to take advantage from as we prepare for the CAA Championship game versus the strongest Drexel team I have seen in a number of years."
Highlighting the Blue Hens' offense was Julia Duffhuis, who earned her first career hat trick. Ashlyn Carr and Berber Bakermans each had three assists. This is the second time this season Bakermans had three assists in a game, and was a career-high for Carr. Bakermans has six assists over her last two CAA games. The mark is tied for fourth all-time in program history for most assists in a game
The Blue Hens opened the game with a pair of goals from Duffhuis in the 19th and 26th minutes. Both goals were off penalty corners and assisted by Carr and Bakermans.
In the second half, the Blue Hens put their foot on the gas and didn't look back, scoring four second-half goals. Genevieve Johnson scored an unassisted goal in the 37th minute, her second of the season, and Carr scored a goal in the 39th minute off a penalty stroke, her third of the season. The Blue Hens finished the third quarter with a goal from Noelle Sabbagh with a minute to go, her sixth of the season. Kiki Oudshoorn was credited with the assist. Duffhuis' third goal of the game came in the 48th minute off another penalty corner. Carr and Lia Becker were credited with the assists.
The Blue Hens have scored 16 goals in the second half over the last six CAA games, including nine second-half goals over the last three CAA games. In addition, the Blue Hens have scored 12 goals over the last two CAA games, the most in a two-game stretch this season.
Delaware outshot the Huskies 19-12 and had an 8-5 shot-on-goal advantage. Lizzie Gaebel was credited with the decision. She had four saves and allowed one goal.
