Davis, Ray Set Career Highs in Men’s Basketball’s Victory Over Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J.– Delaware men's basketball (7-4) extended its win streak to four on Friday after beating Princeton (8-4) 74-69, despite a late push by the hosting Tigers. Four Blue Hens posted double-digit point totals, with a pair at 20+. The Blue Hens shot a season best 54.7 percent from the field.
The teams traded points through most of the first half, with a slim 16-13 Tigers' lead with 11:30 remaining in the opening frame. After Princeton extended the lead with a layup, the Blue Hens danced to an 11-2 run over 2:02 to pull ahead 24-20 and force a timeout by the home team. The final 7:47 saw the Hens outscore the Tigers 13-2 for a 37-25 lead.
LJ Owens had a great first half for the Blue Hens, notching 13 points and extending his streak to eight-consecutive games in double figures. Jyáre Davis scored 11 points in the opening stanza, including hitting his only attempt from three-point range.
The Hens capitalized on the Tigers' mistakes, scoring eight points off turnovers in the frame. Collectively, the group shot 51.7% from the floor, including 3-of-6 from deep.
After starting the second half with more of the same, Princeton began to chip away at the Blue Hens lead. Over a 3:49 span late in the frame, the Tigers went on a 13-3 run, including going 4-for-5 from beyond the arc to get the score to 69-68.
Christian Ray shot a sparkling 8-for-10 from the field and grabbed six rebounds, nailing several clutch free throws with less than a minute remaining to seal the deal for the Blue Hens. Ray finished 6-of-8 from the line.
Davis added 12 points in the second half to stretch his total to to 23, the fourth time he has reached 20 points this season. Davis grabbed nine rebounds in addition to dishing a career-high seven assists to near the triple-double. The Newark, Del. native also tied his career mark with three blocks.
Davis was one of four Blue Hens to score in double figures alongside Ray, who scored a career-high 22, Jameer Nelson Jr., who scored 16, and Owens, who did not score in the second half, remaining at 13.
Delaware has a quick turnaround with a trip to Rider on tap for Monday.
