Men’s Basketball Closes 2022 With Victory Over Elon
12/31/2022 3:59:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NEWARK, Del. – A low-scoring afternoon saw Delaware men's basketball (9-6, 1-1 CAA) earn its first CAA victory of the season, knocking off Elon (2-13, 0-2 CAA) 57-52. Four Blue Hens finished with double-digit point totals to conclude 2022.
Elon started the game with seven-unanswered points up to the media stoppage at 15:31. The Hens quickly responded, taking a 15-0 advantage over a 3:52 span to force an Elon timeout. Four different Blue Hens contributed to the run. After a UD bucket, the Phoenix responded with an 8-0 spurt over 2:11 to tie things at 17 all heading into the under-eight media stoppage.
The Hens held a slight advantage over the remainder of the quarter, heading into the locker room up 31-26. Jameer Nelson Jr. and Jyáre Davis each contributed eight points to lead the way.
Elon started the second half just like it did the first with a run to pull ahead. This time eight straight pushed the Phoenix up 34-31 at the Delaware timeout with 15:52 left. Again like the first half, Delaware answered with a double-digit run of 11-0 to pull ahead 45-38 at the Elon break.
Points were hard to come by late in the frame, as Nelson Jr. officially recorded a double-double with a little less than five minutes remaining, reaching a season-high 10 rebounds.
The Phoenix pulled as close as two points, but clutch free throws by Christian Ray in the waning seconds put the Hens up for good.
Nelson Jr. led all Blue Hens with 15 points with Ray adding 14. Joining them in double figures were Davis (12) and LJ Owens (10).
Delaware shot 38.9 percent from the field in what was a tough shooting day for both sides as Elon countered with a 34-percent mark. No team shot better than 30-percent from beyond the arc.
Delaware hits the road for its first CAA contest away from the BCC with a nationally-televised game at Charleston on Saturday, January 7.
