NEWARK, Del. – Thanks to two players scoring 20 points, Delaware (5-4) stung the Hornets (1-8), 77-69, to claim state bragging rights and head coach Martin Ingelsby's 100th career victory.
Delaware opened the game with six unanswered points before the visitors went on their own run for a 7-6 game at the under-16 media timeout. UD would tie it at nine apiece before DSU ran off on a 7-0 spurt over 1:40 to hold a 16-9 lead at 11:45.
LJ Owens extended his streak to six consecutive games with double-digit points, scoring 11 and going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Despite the first-half spurt from Owens, the Hornets led 33-30 heading into the locker room.
Delaware regained momentum at halftime and began to heat up from the field. The Blue Hens took back the lead early in the second frame and despite a fight from the Hornets, took the lead back for good at the 11:47 mark after a Jameer Nelson Jr. three-ball.
Aided by another double-digit scoring half from Owens, who tied a career-high with 21 on the game, and Nelson Jr. shooting 6-for-9 in the second to stretch his points total to 27 overall, Delaware continued to extend its lead.
Christian Ray notched a corner three-pointer and then grabbed a rebound to reach double-digits in both categories, for his third double-double of the season.
Ingelsby passes his mentor and former head coach Mike Brey on the Delaware all-time wins list with Brey finishing with 99.
Nelson Jr. surpassed the 1,000-career point mark with his third point in Wednesday's game. He's tallied a total of 280 points at George Washington and 644 as a Blue Hen.
Overall, Delaware shot 48.1 percent from the field in the second half and an even 50-percent from beyond the arc, shooting 40-percent overall from the field during the contest.
The Blue Hens will be back in action against Siena on Sunday. Tip off is set for 2:00 p.m. from the Bob Carpenter Center.
