Cousins' Game-Winning Jumper Propel Women’s Basketball Past Northeastern For Seventh-Straight Win

BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team extended their winning streak to seven with a wire-to-wire 66-63 CAA road victory over Northeastern (12-9, 6-5 CAA) Friday evening inside Cabot Center in Boston, Mass. The win moves the Blue Hens to a 17-5 record on the season and 11-1 in conference play.
"It looked very similar to the other night, so maybe we learned something, I don't know. But our team fights," said head coach Natasha Adair. "We talk about the beauty of the balance and depth of this team. This is the three-game gauntlet, we know how hard we played Wednesday night and we knew tonight that we were going to need someone to step up and let's talk about Tara Cousins. They [Northeastern] packed it in so we wouldn't get those paint points but we are a versatile team. We have players that can knock down those shots on the perimeter and she does it every day in practice. We needed that spark when other player's shots weren't falling. On the road, you find a way and its not always pretty. I thought down the stretch we had to get a stop, get that rebound and we did. We will take this and we will be ready to do it again on Sunday."
In the 4-all game with 5:36 left in the opening quarter, Tyi Skinner connects from deep to kick start a 7-0 run for Delaware to take the 11-4 lead. Northeastern responded with 11-0 spurt over the next 3:15 to claim the 15-11 advantage with 1:12 seconds remaining. With the clock winding down, Makayla Pippin found a running Tara Cousins, who then sets her feet behind the three-point line and launches one from deep, for the Blue Hens to knot the game at 15.
Currence led all scorers with 24 points (3-of-6 3FG, 5-of-6 FT) and three steals to pace Northeastern. Soriano added 18 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Delaware shot 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the field, 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from beyond the arc and 87.5 percent (14-of-16) from the free-throw line. Northeastern connected on 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the field, 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from three-point territory and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the charity stripe. Although Northeastern held the rebound margin advantage (34-32), Delaware scored 15 second-chance points off of 12 offensive rebounds. The Blue Hens led the way in assists (12-10), blocks (2-1) and bench points (20-0). Northeastern held the edge in points in the paint (28-14) and fast break points (13-3) while scoring 18 points off of 12 Blue Hen turnovers. Both teams drew even with seven steals apiece.
