HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team completed the season series sweep by claiming the 71-58 CAA road victory over Hofstra (5-14, 2-9 CAA) Sunday afternoon inside David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in Hempstead, N.Y. With the win, the Blue Hens (18-5, 12-1 CAA) extends their winning streak to eight games and to 14 games against the Pride.
"Playing Delaware basketball means starting with our defense," said head coach Natasha Adair. "Their [Hofstra] plan was to make sure that they crashed the boards. I thought Ty Battle came out in the second half like the beast that she is. On the road, third game, you find a way to win. This team will continue to fight, they fought hard today and I thought that we got big stops coming out of the locker room and the momentum shifted back to us and I think we just kept our foot on the gas."
After trailing no more than five points in the game's opening 17:05, Jasmine Dickey drained a routine jumper at the 2:39 mark as part of Delaware's 6-0 run. The Blue Hens used to the run to regain the lead and head into the break with the narrow one-point advantage, 34-33.
Selma Markisic sank a free throw 51 seconds into the third to make it a 34-all game. Delaware determined not to trail again applied pressure for the remainder of the quarter. The Blue Hens built a 10-point cushion heading into the final quarter after Dickey's two free throws, 57-47.
Delaware saw their lead grow to a game high 15 points twice, courtesy of a triple by Dickey at the 32 seconds and a pair of free throws by Ty Battle with five seconds left, 71-56. Hofstra used Rosi Nicholson's jumper at the buzzer to settle the 71-58 final.
Dickey led all scorers with 36 points (13-of-23 FG, 2-of-4 3FG, 8-of-9 FT) to go with seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks in Delaware's victory. Tyi Skinner followed with 12 points (4-of-9 FG, 3-of-4 FT), three rebounds and two assists while Battle pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Nicholson finished with 16 points (4-of-4 FT), six rebounds and four steals to pace Hofstra. Jaylen Hines followed with 15 points (7-of-15 FG) and seven rebounds.
Delaware shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51) from the field, 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (20-of-25) from the free-throw line. Hofstra connected on 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field, 0 percent (0-of-13) from three-point territory and 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the charity stripe. Although Delaware held the rebound margin advantage (36-32), Hofstra scored 14 second-chance points off of 12 offensive rebounds. Delaware outplayed Hofstra in assists (14-7), blocks (8-1), steals (10-9) and fast break points (4-2) while scoring 13 points off 14 Pride turnovers. Hofstra led the way in points in the paint (34-22) while both team were even with 11 bench points.
