Blue Hens Cruise Past Villanova 6-1

WILMINGTON, Del. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team played its home opener on Friday afternoon, cruising to a 6-1 victory over Villanova. The match was played at Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington and was part of a doubleheader as the UD men defeated the Wildcats 7-0.

"It is always fun and exciting when both teams compete together and of course come away with the victory," said Delaware Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "We played great throughout the day and it started with our doubles. Both teams played with great confidence and it is always pleasing to me as a coach when we work on things in practice and we are able to execute them on the match court. In singles, it was a total team effort from one through six and I loved how our players stayed focused while supporting one another. It is a great day to be a Blue Hen!"

The Blue Hens jumped out early in doubles, coming away with wins at the No. 3 and No. 2 positions to clinch the point. The duo of Dominika Sujova and Alina Vasilenko came away with an easy 6-1 victory before the team of Samantha Svendsen and Isabella Montana sealed the point with a 6-4 win.

Delaware won five of the six singles matches to seal the team win. Vasilenko, making her collegiate debut, got things started with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 before Julieta Honrubia finished with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2. Svendsen (6-3, 6-2), Montana (6-4, 6-3) and Sujova (6-2, 6-0) all enjoyed straight-set wins as well.

The UD women will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when the squad hosts Navy in a dual match at DuPont Country Club in Wilmington. The contest is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
