WILMINGTON, Del. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team continued its dominant start to the spring season, sweeping Navy 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at DuPont Country Club. With the victory, the Blue Hens have now won three-straight matches and improve to 4-1 on the year.
"That was a fun win today and we knew going in today that this was going to be a tough battle," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "I am super excited with our doubles play and we are continuing to get better with each match. Our singles were consistent throughout the day and we were able to catch our break towards the end. We will use this confidence as we prepare this week for Rutgers."
It was an exciting start to the match as it came down to the wire for the doubles point. After the two teams split the first two matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, the duo of Eliza Askarova and Julieta Honrubia won a thrilling 7-6 decision at the No. 1 slot, taking the tiebreaker by a 7-5 score to clinch the doubles point. Alina Vasilenko and Dominika Sujova also won their match at No. 3, 6-3.
The excitement continued as five of the six singles matches went the distance, but the Blue Hens were able to come away with victories in all of them. Sujova got things started with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) win at the No. 6 position.
Vasilenko won at No. 3 by a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 score before Isabella Montana clinched the win with a come-from-behind 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory at the No. 5 slot.
Samantha Svendsen (4-6, 6-2, 6-2), Askarova (5-7, 7-5, 6-2) and Honrubia (6-1, 6-7 (7), 7-5) all won their matches to secure the sweep.
The Blue Hens will head out on the road on Friday, Feb. 18 for a 1 p.m. match at Rutgers before returning home on Sunday, Feb. 20 to host Long Island University in a 12 p.m. contest at Elkton Indoor Tennis in Elkton, Md.
