Women’s Basketball Come Up Short Against Drexel
2/20/2022 3:49:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NEWARK, Del. – In the most anticipated rematch of the season, the University of Delaware women's basketball team welcomed Drexel (20-3, 12-1 CAA) Sunday afternoon and suffered a heartbreaking 65-64 decision to Drexel (21-3, 13-1 CAA) inside Bob Carpenter Center. The loss stops Delaware's (18-6, 12-2 CAA) win streak at eight games as the Dragons complete the season series sweep.
"My team fought and that is what you want," said head coach Natasha Adair. "You want to be in a position to have the ball in your hands for the win and I am going to live with that shot. We can go back through this game break it down, but what I love is the fight and the grit of this team. We knew that it was going to be a battle and we knew it was going to come down to the wire -- our team never hung our heads when we got down and we marched back. That is the fight of this team! The good thing is this isn't March but we are building to it. There are things that we can take from this game and continue to get better and improve on. The fight and the resiliency of this group, I will take all day!"
Working to climb out of the 21-9 deficit after one quarter of play, the Blue Hens used a brief 8-4 run, capped by Jasmine Dickey's jumper, to pull within six (25-19) with 5:00 left in the second. Drexel then outscored Delaware 10-7 over the final 3:12 to push the lead back up to double-digits, 37-26, heading into intermission.
Delaware used the break to readjust and came out strong in the third. Clawing their way back into the game, Ty Skinner drained one from deep at the 4:28 mark to ignite a necessary 12-2 spurt for the Blue Hens to close out the third only down by two, 49-47.
Drexel saw its lead grow as large as five (54-49) in the fourth courtesy of Keishana Washington's three-pointer with 6:53 left in the fourth quarter. Dickey knocked down her routine jumper at the 5:25 mark to kick start an 8-0 Blue Hens' run to take its first lead of the afternoon, 62-59. The Dragons answered back by scoring five-unanswered points to regain the lead, 65-62. With eight seconds left, Dickey gets fouled and sinks a pair of free throws to make it a one-point game, 65-64. The Blue Hens see a glimmer of hope after Hannah Nihill misses two critical free throws that would have built a good cushion for Drexel to seal the win. Delaware's final attempt for the win came up short with time expiring.
Dickey paced Delaware with 22 points, 10 rebounds and three steals to post her 12th double-double of the season. Ty Battle followed with 19 points (5-of-7 FT) and 12 rebounds to post her 16th double-double of the season while Skinner added 11 points (3-of-6 3FG) and four rebounds. Tee Johnson nabbed three steals.
For Drexel, Washington led all scorers with 32 points and four rebounds as Nihill chipped in 16 points, five rebounds and a game-high five steals.
Delaware shot 36.4 percent (24-of-66) from the field, 36.4 percent (4-of-11) from beyond the arc and 75 percent (12-of-16) from the free-throw line. Drexel connected on 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the field, 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from three-point territory and 70 percent (7-of-10) from the charity stripe. Delaware held the rebound margin advantage (43-32) while scoring 21 second-chance points off of 20 offensive rebounds. The Blue Hens led the way in fast break points (14-6) and bench points (6-0) while scoring 16 points off of 11 Dragon miscues. Drexel led the way in assists (12-10) blocks (6-1) and points in the paint (36-28). Both teams drew even with seven steals apiece.
