EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team won its fourth-straight dual match to start the spring season with a convincing 6-1 victory on the road at Big Ten-foe Rutgers on Friday afternoon. With the victory, the Blue Hens improve to 5-1 overall while the Scarlet Knights fall to 4-3.
"This was a great win for our ladies today and a nice milestone for the program," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "Our doubles continue to be strong and have been a big factor for us these last few matches. I'm super proud of the resiliency of our players for coming back and playing physical tennis. Most of these matches are hard-fought comebacks and the fact that they are winning a lot of these three-set matches speaks a lot about their fitness and toughness. Our assistant coaches and support staff have put in a lot of hours on and off the court and it's nice to see the hard work paying off. We will use this confidence as we prepare for Long Island University on Sunday."
The Blue Hens swept the doubles point with 7-5 wins by Alina Vasilenko and Dominika Sujova at the No. 3 position and Isabella Montana and Samantha Svendsen at No. 2, respectively.
In singles action, UD won five of the six matches including two three-set victories. After Rutgers tied the match with a win at No. 2, Vasilenko put the Blue Hens back in the lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3. At No. 6, Sujova swept her opponent with a 6-3, 6-4 victory before Montana sealed the team win with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 5.
Eliza Askarova also had a strong win at No. 1, claiming a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 comeback victory, while Samantha Svendsen won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4.
The Blue & Gold will be back on the court on Sunday when the squad returns home to host Long Island University. The match is slated to start at 12 p.m. and will be played at Elkton Indoor Tennis in Elkton, Md.
