DELAND, Fla. – Manhattan scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back as the Jaspers posted an 11-1 victory over Delaware Saturday afternoon at the Hatter Classic.
Harrison Treble opened the scoring with an RBI single, while Pete Durocher singled home two more runs before Jack Lynch delivered a two-run triple during the rally.
David Bermudez doubled home a pair in the bottom of the second, before Manhattan scored another run on a double play. The Jaspers tacked on a run in the third when Frankie Marinelli hit a sacrifice fly.
Joseph Carpenter put the Blue Hens on the board in the top of the fourth when he belted a home run to leftfield, but that would be Delaware's lone run of the day. Manhattan the closed the scoring in the sixth when Bermudez recorded an RBI double.
JJ Freeman recorded two hits for Delaware while Bryce Greenly, John Weglarz, Jake Dunion and Carpenter each added one. Blue Hen freshman starter Carter Welch was tagged for nine runs (seven earned) in one-plus innings on the mound, before Dom Velazquez, Wyatt Nelson, Dan Frake and Gavin Hinchliffe combined to allow just two runs in the final seven frames.
Delaware closes out the tournament on Sunday with a 9 a.m. game against fourth-ranked Notre Dame.
Jim Sherman
"We're disappointed in today's outcome, we just got outplayed in all aspects of the game. Our freshman Carter Welch had a tough start, but I believe in him and expect a bounce back effort in his next outing."
