NEWARK, Del. – In honor of Black History Month, Delaware Athletics continues to spotlight several Blue Hen student-athletes. Jameer Nelson, Jr., a transfer to Delaware this past fall, shared what influential figure in history has made an impact on him.
Nelson Jr., a native of Haverford, Pa., is in his first season with the men's basketball team. He has started every game for the Blue Hens and has made his mark on the team averaging 13.8 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game. The guard has started every game this season and is majoring in English at UD.
To Nelson Jr., Black History Month means the appreciation and acknowledgement of Black history and Black culture, and how they affect so many aspects of society.
Reflecting on Black History Month, Nelson, Jr. shared that, "My family motivates me because all of my success is theirs. They brought me up to be the person I am today."
A part of Black History Month is celebrating the life and achievements of others. An inspiration to Nelson, Jr., is Ruby Bridges. "She inspires me to be great, because of her bravery and perseverance," he shared. If you're not familiar with Ruby Bridges, at the age of six she advanced the cause of civil rights in November of 1960 when she became the first African American student to integrate an elementary school in the South.
