BOCA RATON, Fla. – Blue Hen infielders John Weglarz and Joey Loynd each belted two-run homers as the Delaware baseball team took the series opener from Florida Atlantic, 8-5, Friday night.

UD opened the scoring in the top of the second when Jake Dunion led off with an infield single, moved to third on a Loynd double, and scored on a wild pitch.

After Dominic Ragazzo and Bryce Greenly singled in the third, JJ Freeman drove home Ragazzo with a single to right. Dunion then hit a sacrifice fly to right, chasing home Greenly to make it a 3-0 game.

The Blue Hens tacked on two more runs in the fourth when Loynd led off with a double and Weglarz followed with a homer down the rightfield line.

The Owls' Gabriel Rincones led off the bottom of the fourth with a homer to put FAU on the board, but Delaware answered right back with three runs in the top of the fifth. After Joseph Carpenter worked a one-out walk, Loynd blasted a pitch over the fence in leftcenter to make it a 7-1 game. One out later Aidan Kane singled and came around to score when Nick Vera tripled to right.

FAU got a run back in the fifth on a solo homer by Shane Magrann, while Tyler Kelder homered in the seventh before Armando Albert scored on a wild pitch.

An RBI double by Steven Loden made it an 8-5 game in the eighth, but UD reliever Dom Velazquez escaped the jam and then struck out the side in the ninth to slam the door.

Loynd finished 3 for 4 at the plate with two doubles, a homer and two RBI, while Ragazzo and Kane added two hits apiece. UD starter Chris Ludman earned the win after allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of work, while Velazquez gave up one run and struck out six in the final 2.1 frames.

"We got a great start from Chris Ludman, he was mixing all of his pitches and keeping the FAU batters off balance. Dom Velazquez did a great job out of the pen; neither of those guys walked a batter. Joey Loynd broke out and had a Joey Loynd type offensive night with two doubles and a homer."
