BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic scored six runs in a decisive fifth inning rally as the Owls evened the weekend series by posting an 8-3 victory over Delaware on Saturday afternoon.
FAU scored a run in the bottom of the first inning when Jackson Ross delivered an RBI single to left, but Delaware quickly answered in the top of the second as Jake Dunion led off with a single up the middle and came around to score on a double to center by Joseph Carpenter.
Armando Albert singled home a run in the bottom half to put the Owls back in front, before Joey Loynd drilled his second homer in as many days in the fourth with a shot down the rightfield line.
However FAU took control by scoring five runs on just two hits during its fifth inning rally. After the Owls loaded the bases on two walks and an error, Tyler Kelder put FAU up for good with an RBI single to left. Two more runs scored on a pair of bases loaded walks, and after another pair scored on a fielder's choice and an RBI groundout, Gabriel Rincones singled home the final run of the frame.
JJ Freeman doubled and came around to score when Austin Elliott reached on an error in the top of the seventh, but Delaware would not get closer.
Loynd finished 2 for 4 at the plate, while six Blue Hens added a hit apiece. UD starter Carter Welch allowed two runs (one earned) in the opening 2.1 frames, before Jose Ledesma was tagged with the loss after he gave up three runs (two earned) despite not allowing a hit in 1.2 innings of work. Wyatt Nelson later tossed two scoreless frames for the Blue Hens, while Gavin Hinchliffe retired all three batters he faced in the eighth.
Jim Sherman
"We played decent except for the fifth inning. Tomorrow we've got to win to take the series. I'm excited to have Joey Silan on the mound for us."
