WILMINGTON, Del. – The University of Delaware men's tennis team came up just short on Friday afternoon, dropping a tough 4-3 decision to Richmond in a dual match played at the Delcastle Tennis Center. With the loss, the Blue Hens slip to 2-5 on the season, while the Spiders move to 4-3.
"That was a good battle today and although we came up a little short, we competed well," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "We started out slow in doubles but then figured it out towards the end but, unfortunately, it was too late. In singles, we battled on every court, and congrats to James, Alex and Tobias for pulling out some hard-earned victories. We will learn from this and bounce back on Sunday against Bucknell."
Richmond claimed the doubles point with a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position and a 6-4 victory at No. 4. James Wilkinson and Pascal Wagemaker were leading 6-5 at No. 1, but the match went unfinished.
Alexandre Gluck pulled the Blue Hens even with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles before Wilkinson gave UD a 2-1 lead with a 7-6, 6-4 win at the top slot.
It was not enough, however, as the Spiders clinched the win with three-straight victories. Tobias Sonne came away with a tough, three-set win at No. 6 by a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5) score, but it was not enough.
The Delaware men will be back in action on Sunday when the Blue Hens host Bucknell. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m. and will be played at Elkton Indoor Tennis in Elkton, Md.
