ELKTON, Md. – The University of Delaware men's tennis team got back into the win column on Sunday, defeating Bucknell in an exciting 4-3 decision at Elkton Indoor Tennis in Elkton, Md. With the win, the Blue Hens snapped a four-match losing streak and improve to 3-5 on the season.
"That was a good match for us to pull out today and hopefully this will give our guys some confidence as we go into our March matches," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "We are close to solving our doubles puzzle and we will use this week to work on some different strategies. In singles, we came out hot winning the first set on courts 1-3, and it was a good battle throughout the day. It came down to the last match at number five singles and Pierce played to win. He was bold and brave on the big points and he did not let off from the gas. We will use this confidence as we prepare for Monmouth next week."
It was Bucknell that took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Pierce Gilheany and Liam Hedlund pulled out a 6-4 win at No. 2, but it was not enough.
James Wilkinson pulled UD even with a 6-4, 6-0 victory to open singles play. Pascal Wagemaker followed that up with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 to put the Blue Hens ahead.
After the Bison claimed victories at No. 3 and No. 4, Tobias Sonne evened the match back up with a clean 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6. Gilheany then provided the clinching point with his 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 5.
Delaware will head out on the road next weekend for a single match. The Blue Hens will take on Monmouth in West Long Branch, New Jersey in a 4 p.m. match on Sunday, March 6.
