RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end on Saturday as the No. 63 Blue Hens dropped a hard-fought match 6-1 to No. 52 VCU. With the setback, UD moves to 6-2 on the season, while the Rams improve to 10-1.
The doubles point was highly contested as VCU won the first match at No. 2, but Alina Vasilenko and Dominika Sujova came away with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 to even things up. The Rams, however, would take the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 position.
VCU would take control of the match in singles play, taking the first four decisions to clinch the team victory. The Blue Hens would not go down quietly as Vasilenko dropped the opening set at No. 3, but would bounce back to take the next two sets for a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory. Sujova also battled at No. 6, winning the second set to even the match before eventually following in a long super-set tiebreaker 13-11.
The Blue Hens will return to action next weekend when they hit the road for dual matches at Duquesne and West Virginia. UD will take on the Dukes in Pittsburgh on Saturday, March 5 at 4 p.m., before challenging the Mountaineers in Morgantown, West Virginia at 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 6.
