PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The No. 74 University of Delaware women's tennis team got back into the win column with an impressive 4-0 road victory at Duquesne on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Blue Hens improve to 7-2 on the season, while the Dukes fall to 4-4.
"It's always positive to be able to win on the road and we had to fight hard today to get to four points," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "We played very well in doubles as we executed our serves and returns extremely well. In singles, we came out a little flat on a few courts but we were able to figure things out as the matches progressed. We will use this win today as confidence as we continue running to the roar as we get ready for West Virginia tomorrow."
The Blue Hens got things going quickly, easily sweeping the doubles point. Eliza Askarova and Julieta Honrubia opened play with a 6-3 win at No. 1 before Samantha Svendsen and Isabella Montana clinched the point with a 6-1 victory at No. 3 The duo of Alina Vasilenko and Dominika Sujova were also victorious at No. 2 by a 6-3 score.
In singles, Vasilenko kept things rolling with a 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 2 position before Askarova finished off her opponent at No. 1 – 6-3, 6-3. Sujova sealed Delaware's victory with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win at No. 5.
The Blue & Gold will be right back in action on Sunday morning when the squad travels to West Virginia for a 9 a.m. dual match against the Mountaineers.
