TOWSON, Md. – Towson quickly erased a nine-point deficit with a 14-point run and led the rest of the way as the Tigers defeated Delaware, 69-57, in the completion of a suspended game Monday night at SECU Arena.
The original contest on Jan. 27 was suspended due to unsafe court conditions with Delaware leading 38-29 at the 18:42 mark.
However Towson opened Monday's action with a three-pointer, and after Dylan Painter scored inside, the Tigers reeled off 14 straight points to go up 46-40 at the 14:35 mark.
The Blue Hens closed within a pair three times, the final instance at 55-53 following a Kevin Anderson jumper with 5:46 to play. But Towson answered with an eight-point spurt to extend the margin to 63-53 with 2:10 on the clock.
Jameer Nelson Jr. drilled a three-pointer to stop the run, but Delaware would not get closer.
Painter finished the game with 19 points, while Jyare Davis added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Nelson Jr. contributed 14 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Cam Holden recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds to pace Towson, while Charles Thompson posted 15 points and nine boards.
The Tigers claimed a share of the CAA regular season title and will be the top seed in next week's CAA Tournament in Washington, D.C. The Blue Hens will be the fifth seed and will face fourth-seeded Drexel in Sunday's quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m.
Martin Ingelsby
"Give Towson credit, they ratcheted up their defense and got off to a great start offensively. They got confident and we didn't handle adversity well. We've got to regroup and play better down at the CAA Tournament."
