HARRISONBURG, Va. – Ebby Asamoah scored a career-high 30 points while Jyare Davis also set his career-best with 22 points to lead Delaware to an impressive 85-69 road win over James Madison Saturday afternoon at the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
Asamoah, who returned from an ankle sprain suffered Thursday at Towson, finished 8 of 11 from the field, including 6 of 9 from three-point range, and hit all eight of his free throw attempts. The junior also grabbed seven rebounds while playing 28 minutes on the day.
Davis went 10 of 14 from the floor, also corralled seven boards, and handed out six assists in 32 minutes of action. Jameer Nelson Jr. was the third Blue Hen in double figures with 14 points, while Andrew Carr led UD with eight rebounds.
Delaware shot 49.2 percent from the field, finished 16 of 18 from the foul line, and handed out 21 assists.
Vado Morse paced the Dukes with 19 points while Terrence Edwards contributed 17 points, but JMU shot just 39.0 percent from the floor.
Delaware led the entire first half, and took a 32-23 lead after Asamoah drilled a three-pointer at the six-minute mark. Two free throws by Davis increased the margin to 43-33 with a minute and a half to play, before JMU's Jalen Hodge countered with a late free throw to make it a nine-point game at the break.
The Blue Hens then opened the second half by scoring 10 of the first 13 points, extending the margin to 53-37 on a Ryan Allen triple with 16:52 remaining.
Delaware was still up 16 a minute and a half later before JMU used a 10-1 run to close within 58-51 with 12:10 on the clock.
The Dukes got as close as six, and it was still a seven-point game at 71-64 with six minutes left. But Delaware then scored the next 10 points, including six by Asamoah, to put the game away.
Martin Ingelsby
"Our group has good depth, and we talk about next man up. I can't say enough about Ebby, and we've seen Jyare do this in practice. We did a good job of handling their pressure, and worked on getting the ball inside. We have a lot of weapons, and this is an unselfish group. I'm proud of our group, this was a team win through some adversity."
