NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's basketball team earned a No. 15 seed in the South Region and will take on second-seeded Villanova in the first round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Colonial Athletic Association champion Blue Hens learned their fate Sunday night during the Selection Show Watch Party in front of a boisterous crowd in the Bob Carpenter Center.
The game will take place Friday at 2:45 p.m. and will be televised by CBS.
Delaware (22-12), earned its sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history after last week's thrilling run to the CAA title in Washington, D.C. The Blue Hens won their second CAA title, and will play in the Big Dance for the first time since 2014.
The Blue & Gold features a balanced lineup including six players averaging at least 9.5 points per game, led by second team All-CAA performer Jameer Nelson, Jr. who leads the Blue Hens with 13.7 points. Dylan Painter paces UD with 6.6 rebounds and ranks second with an 11.9 scoring average, while Ryan Allen is third on the squad at 11.8 points per outing. Villanova is 26-7 on the season and finished with a 16-4 record in the BIG EAST, winning the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 2 seed. It was Villanova's fifth BIG EAST title in the past eight years. The Wildcats are led by BIG EAST Player of the Year Collin Gillespie, who leads the squad in both scoring (15.9 ppg) and assists (3.3 apg) and Justin Moore who is averaging 15.0 ppg. Eric Dixon (6.3 rpg) and Jermaine Samuels (6.2 rpg) lead Villanova on the boards. As a team, the Wildcats are averaging 72.6 ppg while shooting 35.9 percent from three-point range.
The Blue Hens have played Villanova 15 times in program history, with the Wildcats winning each contest. The most recent matchup came during the 2019-20 season when the two teams met in Newark, N.J. as part of the Never Forget Tribute Classic. Then-No. 20 Villanova defeated UD 78-70 as current Blue Hens Kevin Anderson and Ryan Allen finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Delaware and Villanova are matched up with seventh-seeded Ohio State and 10th-seeded Loyola Chicago. Also playing in Pittsburgh will be No. 4 seed Illinois taking on No. 13 seed Chattanooga and fifth-seeded Houston playing 12th-seeded UAB.
