Delaware Closes Weekend with 4-3 Win Over Georgetown

WILMINGTON, Del. – The University of Delaware men's tennis team capped off a busy, three-match weekend with a 4-3 victory over Georgetown on Sunday afternoon in a dual match played at the DuPont Country Club. With the win, the Blue Hens won two of their three matches over the weekend and improve to 5-7 on the season.

"This was another solid win for the program and it was an exciting match to be a part of," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "We knew going into today's match that this was going to be a tough one, and we kept our cool through and through and we battled hard on every court. Our doubles looked great today and we are definitely improving with each match. In singles, we came out firing and had great energy and grit, and I am really proud of my players for staying focused and composed throughout the day. We will use this confidence as we prepare for Temple on Thursday."

The Blue Hens jumped out to a quick lead, taking the doubles point in the first two matches. Pierce Gilheany and James Wilkinson claimed a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 position before the duo of Guilherme Valdoleiros and Pascal Wagemaker clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 3.

Wagemaker kept the momentum with UD as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles. Georgetown tied the match up with two-straight wins before Valdoleiros put the Blue Hens up 3-2 with a 7-6, 6-0 win at No. 5.

With the match all square at three wins apiece, Tobias Sonne provided the match-clinching win at No. 6 singles, defeating his opponent in a tough, three-set match 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action on Thursday when the squad travels to Temple for a 10:30 a.m. match.
