Women’s Tennis Drops Tight Match at Temple

CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The University of Delaware women's tennis battled until the finish but dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Temple on Thursday. With the setback, the Blue Hens see their four-match winning streak come to an end and slip to 10-3 on the season.
"Today was a tough day for the program," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "We competed well throughout the day but we lost a little focus in the end. It is a good learning moment for our players as we had several chances to turn this around. This definitely stings a little bit but we will bounce back as we prepare for our Sunday matches."
The match was a tight one from the start as the two teams split the first two doubles matches. Dominika Sujova and Alina Vasilenko remained undefeated as a duo with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 position, but the Owls won the deciding match to take the doubles point.
Temple extended its match lead to 3-0 with wins at No. 3 and 4 to open singles play. Sujova got the Blue Hens on the board with a three-set victory at No. 5, defeating her opponent 6-4, 6-7, 6-2. Vasilenko pulled UD within one as she also won a tight match, pulling out a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2.
The comeback would not happen, however, as the Owls clinched the match with a victory at No. 1 singles. Isabella Montana finished off the scoring with Delaware's third three-set victory at No. 6, winning 7-5, 5-7, 10-7.
The Blue Hens will be back in action on Sunday as they return home for their first matches on campus at the Delaware Tennis Courts. Delaware will host two opponents on Sunday, taking on St. Francis (Brooklyn) at 11 a.m. before turning around and playing Goldey-Beacom at 3 p.m.
