Blue Hens Drop Series Opener To Monmouth

NEWARK, Del. - The Delaware baseball team fell to Monmouth, 10-4, Friday afternoon in the first of the three-game home series at Bob Hannah Stadium.Â
Shortstop JJ Freeman led the way offensively for the Blue Hens by going 2 for 5 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI, while Joseph Carpenter also had two hits on the day.Â
The Hawks scored two runs in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. James Harmstead doubled to leftcenter to drive Dixon Black home, followed by a single from Joey Ventresca that chased Harmstead across the plate.
Delaware answered back in the bottom of the first when Freeman singled up the middle to score Dominic Ragazzo. Aidan Kane pulled UD after singling to first base, allowing Bryce Greenly to score.
Joey Loynd then reached on a throwing error by Harmstead, allowing Jake Dunion and Freeman to cross the plate and give the Blue Hens a 4-2 lead after one.Â
Both teams went scoreless over the next four innings, as Monmouth tallied three hits between the second and fifth innings while Delaware had two hits and left four on base over the four frames.Â
Capitalizing on two Blue Hen errors in the top of the sixth, the Hawks were able to take the lead by scoring by three runs to take a 5-4 lead. Monmouth had three hits, including another double by Harmstead.Â
Chris Andrews worked a bases loaded walk in the seventh, and after another run scored on a Brady Mutz sacrifice fly, Jake Catalano delivered a two-run double and Casey Caufield ripped an RBI single to close the scoring.
Delaware continues its home series against Monmouth on Saturday with the second game beginning at 1 p.m. tomorrow in Bob Hannah Stadium.
