Delaware Rallies Late For 4-3 Win at South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The University of Delaware men's tennis team opened its Spring Break trip with a hard-fought, comeback 4-3 victory at South Carolina State on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 7-8 on the season.
"It was a great battle today for the program playing in tough windy conditions, and I am so proud of our players for staying mentally tough throughout the day," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "This was a great first win for us on our spring break trip and we will surely use this confidence as we prepare for the College of Charleston on Tuesday."
Despite a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles by Liam Hedlund and Luis Molina, South Carolina State took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
Pascal Wagemaker and James Wilkinson brought the momentum back to Delaware's side with wins at No. 2 and No. 1 singles, respectively. Wagemaker claimed a 6-4, 6-2 victory while Wilkinson cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win.
The Bulldogs pulled back ahead with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 before Guilherme Valdoleiros evened things up again with a hard-fought, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 5.
It all came down to the No. 6 position where Tobias Sonne split the first two sets with his opponents before falling behind 4-1 in the deciding third set. He rallied to win each of the next five points to take the set 6-4 and win the match for the Blue & Gold.
The Blue Hens will return to action in South Carolina when they take on Charleston for a CAA match on Tuesday afternoon. First serve against the Cougars is set for 3 p.m.
