CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team overcame a 3-0 deficit, winning the final four singles matches to come back and defeat Charleston Southern 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Blue Hens finish 2-1 on their Spring Break trip and improve to 14-4 overall.
"Today was another great battle for our ladies and we were lucky enough to be on the winning side of this," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "This was the first time that we were able to win the match after losing the doubles point, and I'm so proud of our ladies for their resiliency and bouncing back after a tough day yesterday. This was a total team effort from one through six and I couldn't be prouder of how we wrapped up our spring break trip. We will use this confidence as we prepare for Towson next week."
Charleston Southern quickly took the lead as they claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Alina Vasilenko and Dominika Sujova came away with a 6-3 victory at the No. 1 slot, but it was not enough.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-0 as they opened singles play with wins at No. 4 and No. 5. Julieta Honrubia got the rally started with a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 before Vasilenko won the first of three-consecutive three-set matches as she claimed a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 victory at No. 2.
Eliza Askarova pull UD even with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 win at No. 1 before Maria Constantinou completed the comeback with a thrilling 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 win at the No. 6 position, taking the third-set tiebreaker 9-7.
The Blue Hens will be back in action on Thursday, April 7 when the squad makes the short trip to Towson for a CAA matchup.
