MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 74 University of Delaware women's tennis team completed a strong road weekend with a great 4-3 victory over Big 12-foe West Virginia. With the win, the Blue Hens complete a 2-0 road trip and sit at 8-2 on the season.
"This was another solid win for us over a Power Five school, and I'm really proud of our ladies for bringing it and not backing down," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "Our doubles continue to be strong and we are playing with a lot of confidence at the net and with our poaching. In singles, Alina gave us a quick win to help us go up 2-0, and momentum was on our side. Julieta and Eliza came back from losing the first set to win in three sets, and Eliza clinched the winning point for us at No. 1. We will continue to build from this as we prepare this week for Hofstra and Georgetown."
After West Virginia won the first doubles match, the duo of Samantha Svendsen and Isabella Montana evened things up with a 6-4 win at No. 3. The team of Alina Vasilenko and Dominika Sujova clinched the doubles point for the Blue Hens with a 6-3 victory at No. 2.
A 7-6 (1), 6-2 win at No. 2 singles by Vasilenko opened up singles play and extended UD's lead to 2-0. After the Mountaineers got on the board, Julieta Honrubia overcame a first-set loss at No. 3 to come back for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win and bring the Blue Hens to within a point of winning the match. Elisa Askarova provided that clinching point at No. 1 singles, winning a tight, three-set match 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
The Blue & Gold will return home next weekend for a pair of matches. Delaware will host Hofstra for its first CAA match of the season on Friday afternoon at Delcastle Tennis Center. The Blue Hens will then take on Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at DuPont Country Club.
