NEWARK, Del. – Delaware Baseball fell to visiting Rider,14-6, this afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. Despite dropping the Sunday game, the Blue Hens recorded the series win after victories on Friday and Saturday.
Catcher Nick Vera led the way for the Blue Hens on offense, as he finished 2 for 4 at the plate for Delaware. Vera recorded a solo homer and a three-run homer.
The Broncs led for the first time all weekend when Jordan Erbe scored in the top of the third inning to give Rider a 1-0 edge. The Blue Hens tied it up in the bottom of the third inning after a Vera solo home run to make it 1-All.
After a fly out to center to start the top of the fourth, Rider was able to score five runs to take a 6-1 lead over Delaware.
The Blue Hens once again bounced back with a four-run fourth inning that included a three-run home run to right field by Vera to trim the Broncs' lead to one run.
Rider collected six runs on five hits in the top of the sixth to disrupt the Blue Hen defense and added two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 14-5 advantage through eight innings.
Aidan Kane recorded a solo homer over the right-center wall to add a run to the scoreboard for the Blue Hens in the bottom of the ninth.
Delaware finished with eight hits while committing one error in the game. Starter Joey Silan took the loss after six runs scored, only two earned, in 3.2 innings of work.
The Broncs finished with 15 hits and no errors. The Blue Hens committed just one error in the game while tallying seven hits.
Delaware continues its homestand with a Tuesday matchup against Delaware State at 3 p.m. The Blue Hens remain home to host Iona in a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
"We played well the first two days on Friday and Saturday. We got everything we wanted on the pitching end, we had offense, and we played good defense. Today was the opposite. We didn't get any of that and had some mental lapses defensively. We did reach our ultimate goal, which was to win the series. When you're in the driver's seat to sweep it, you want to come out better than we did today. That means we have some growing to do. Hopefully, next time when we're in this position we can come through."
