NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware baseball team dropped a midweek contest on Tuesday afternoon, falling to Delaware State 18-15 in a slugfest at Bob Hannah Stadium. With the setback, the Blue Hens slip to 4-7 on the season, while the Hornets improve to 3-5.
Bryce Greenly, JJ Freeman and John Weglarz led the UD offense with three hits apiece and each scored a pair of runs while Wglarz hit one of Delaware's four home runs and was a double short of the cycle. Jake Dunion had two hits, including a homer and Joey Loynd had a grand slam and five RBI.
Delaware State jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring on one hit, four walks and two hit batters.
The Blue Hens answered right back with a 10-run bottom half of the inning to take the lead as 11-straight batters reached with two outs. Loynd hit a grand slam, his third homer of the season, to start the rally. Delaware reloaded the bases before Dominic Ragazzo delivered a two-run single and Greenly added an RBI base knock. Freeman then drove in two runs with a double before Joseph Carpenter capped the inning with an RBI single to give UD the 10-7 lead.
Loynd drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning to make it an 11-7 game before the Hornets cut the lead to one with a three-run top of the fourth. A bases-loaded walk in the top of the fifth tied the game at 11 before Delaware State reclaimed the lead with a run in the sixth.
Dunion knotted things back up at 12 with a solo home run, his first of the season, to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Weglarz followed that with a blast of his own, his second, two batters later to put UD back up 13-12.
An error allowed a run to score in the top of the seventh as the Hornets tied the score, but a solo home run by Aidan Kane, his third on the campaign, again gave the Blue Hens the lead after seven innings.
Delaware State took the lead for good with a three-run triple in the eighth inning and extended its advantage to 18-14 with a two-run double.
A sacrifice fly from Ragazzo cut UD's deficit to 18-15 in the bottom of the eighth, but the Blue Hens could not get any closer as that proved to be the final score.
The Blue & Gold will remain at home as the squad hosts a three-game series against Iona this weekend at Bob Hannah Stadium. First pitch in Friday's series opener is set for 3 p.m., while Saturday's and Sunday's contests will both begin at 1 p.m.
