No. 3 Blue Hens Defeat No. 6 Drexel to Advance to CAA Semifinals

ELON, N.C. – The third-seeded University of Delaware women's tennis team defeated No. 6 Drexel 4-1 on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2022 CAA Women's Tennis Championship at Elon's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 19-5 on the season and advance to the semifinals for just the second time in program history.
"We played solid, consistent tennis today and we had to fight hard to come away with the win," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "It's always tricky playing the same opponent within a close time frame, but our girls were up to the challenge and they left it on the courts. We are striking the ball with a lot of confidence right now."
The Blue Hens had no problems in the doubles point, cruising to a pair of wins to take a quick 1-0 lead. At the No. 1 position, Dominika Sujova and Alina Vasilenko claimed a 6-1 win before Eliza Askarova and Maria Constantinou clinched the point at No. 2 with a 6-2 victory. The duo of Isabella Montana and Julieta Honrubia were leading 5-2 at No. 3, but their match when unfinished.
Vasilenko kept the momentum going into singles play, as she blew past her opponent for a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 to give UD a 2-0 advantage.
After Drexel claimed a win at No. 3, Sujova put Delaware back in the win column with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 5. Needing just one more win, Askarova clinched the match for the Blue & Gold with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over her opponent at No. 1.
Delaware advances to the CAA Semifinals for just the first time since 2013. The Blue Hens will take on No. 2 William & Mary on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Elon's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
