NEWARK, Del. – Delaware scored six runs in the first and seventh innings as the Blue Hens cruised to a 15-0 non-league victory over Maryland Eastern Shore Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Six Blue Hens recorded two hits during the 14-hit attack, as Aidan Kane drove home three runs while Joseph Carpenter and Jake Dunion both scored three times.
Four UD pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout, led by starter Carter Welch who tossed four scoreless frames. Dan Frake then allowed just one hit in three innings of work to earn his first win of the season, before Reece Bolton and Matt Kennedy each tossed a scoreless frame.
The Blue Hens' first run of the game scored on a throwing error, before Dunion and Kane added RBI singles to make it a 3-0 game. After another run scored on an error, Jordan Hutchins delivered an RBI groundout before John Weglarz stroked a run-scoring single to center.
Gabe Dermott singled home a pair in the second, while Carpenter added an RBI single in the third to make it a 9-0 game.
Delaware then tacked on six more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a towering two-run homer to left by Brett Lesher. Kane then tripled home two more runs before crossing the plate on a Joey Loynd single.
Jim Sherman
"It's nice to get kind of a relaxing win. We swung the bats well, and the middle of the order really pounded the ball. Obviously we got a shutout with some guys who haven't had as many opportunities on the mound. Just a good overall win, and good preparation for a big conference weekend."
