NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team has earned the No. 3 seed for the upcoming 2022 CAA Women's Tennis Championship, which will be held April 29 – May 1 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of Elon University in Elon, N.C. The Blue Hens will take on No. 6 Drexel in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Delaware enters the CAA Championship with an 18-5 overall record having won its past four matches and eight of the last 10. The Blue Hens went 3-2 in five matches against CAA opponents, including a 6-1 win over Drexel in the home finale on April 15. In that match, UD swept the double point before winning five of the six singles matches while dropping just one set.
The seeding is tied for the highest overall for the Blue & Gold at the CAA Championship, matching the No. 3 seed the program earned in 2018. Overall, the Blue Hens are 8-18 in the conference tournament and 2-0 against Drexel with wins over the Dragons in the first round of the 2006 tournament and a quarterfinal victory in 2013. Delaware is looking for its first postseason win since a first-round win over Hofstra in the 2015 CAA Championship.
The Dragons enter the postseason with a 6-12 overall record and a 2-2 mark against CAA opponents. Drexel won three of its final four matches of the season, with its only loss coming against the Blue Hens.
The eight-team championship begins Friday with quarterfinal play. The winner of the Delaware-Drexel matchup will advance to Saturday's semifinals to take on the winner of the contest between No. 2 William & Mary and No. 7 Towson. The championship match will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday, with an automatic berth to the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship on the line.
