Saint Joseph’s Defeats Delaware, 4-2, in Pitchers’ Duel

NEWARK, Del. – Saint Joseph's scored all four of its runs in a fifth inning rally as the Hawks defeated Delaware, 4-2, in a non-conference game Tuesday night at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Blue Hens struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning when Joey Loynd led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a two-out single to right by John Weglarz.
However the Hawks scored all the runs they would need by putting up a four spot in the fifth. Nate Thomas legged out an infield single to drive home SJU's first run, while Travis Rinker delivered the big hit of the frame with a three-run double down the leftfield line.
Delaware got a run back in the bottom of the seventh when JJ Freeman blasted his team-high ninth home run of the season, but the Blue Hens would not get closer.
Carter Welch tossed four scoreless innings for his second straight outing, while also striking out a career-high seven batters on the night. Relievers Nate Rolka, Dan Frake, Reece Bolton and Jose Ledesma combined to allow just one hit in 4.1 scoreless frames.
Loynd finished with three hits for the Blue Hens while Freeman, Weglarz and Jake Dunion added one apiece.
Jim Sherman
"Both clubs pitched well tonight, they just did a tad better offensively with that four-run fifth inning. The bases loaded double was the big difference, and we just couldn't come up with enough big hits. Pitching was the story and not enough offense for us, but it was a good midweek game getting ready for a big series down at Charleston."
