NEWARK, Del. – JJ Freeman homered twice including a grand slam while Joey Silan allowed just one hit on the mound as the Delaware baseball team pounded Saint Peter's, 13-0, Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Delaware has now won eight consecutive games, its longest winning streak since a 13-game run from Mar. 19 - Apr. 9, 2013.
Freeman drove home five runs on the day while Joseph Carpenter finished 4 for 4 with two doubles, a homer and three RBI. Aidan Kane was 3 for 4 with two doubles, a homer and three RBI, while Bryce Greenly added two hits and scored twice.
Silan gave up a leadoff single in the top of the first but did not allow another hit from there, striking out eight batters in seven shutout frames. In his last two outings Silan has surrendered just two hits and struck out 15 in 13 scoreless innings.
Carpenter got the scoring started with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, while he added an infield single to drive home Greenly in the third.
Kane doubled and scored on a passed ball in the fourth, before Freeman cranked a solo homer and Kane added a two-run shot in the fifth to make it a 7-0 game.
John Weglarz singled home Gabe Dermott in the sixth, before Freeman belted a grand slam to rightfield. Carpenter then doubled and scored on a Kane double to increase the Blue Hens' advantage to 13-0.
Jim Sherman
"We got a good outing out of Silan, that's a shot in the arm for him to have back-to-back really good starts. Joey needed that headed back into conference play next week. Offensively Freeman had a great day with the two home runs and five RBI, and Carpenter and Kane had really good days as well. We're going pretty good offensively and overall as a team. Hopefully tomorrow we can get the sweep."
