MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Charleston pitchers Emmett Bice and Reed Parris combined on a five-hit shutout as the Cougars defeated Delaware, 9-0, Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point.
Charleston scored all the runs it would need by putting up a three spot in the bottom of the first inning. Joseph Mershon singled home the first run of the game, while Trotter Harlan also scored on a throwing error on the play. Tanner McCallister then followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Cougars an early three-run cushion.
Tyler Sorrentino delivered an RBI single in the second, while Cam Dean scored on a fielder's choice later in the frame to make it a 5-0 game.
Blue Hen reliever Zach Klapak then fired four scoreless innings, before Charleston added two runs in both the seventh and eighth frames. Jared Kirven homered and Sam Cochrane ripped an RBI single in the seventh, before Kirven added a run-scoring single of his own in the eighth.
John Weglarz, Bryce Greenly, Joseph Carpenter, Aidan Kane and Joey Loynd each recorded a hit for Delaware, which was shut out for the first time this season.
UD starter Wyatt Nelson took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) in one-plus inning, while Klapak struck out seven batters during five scoreless frames of relief.
