NEWARK, Del. – Elon pitchers shut down the Blue Hen offense during both games as the Phoenix swept a doubleheader from Delaware, 5-1 and 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Elon scored all five of its runs during the opener in the top of the second inning. After the first two batters singled, Will Vergantino reached on an error to load the bases. After Parker Haskin drove home the first run on a groundout, Charlie Granatell worked a bases loaded walk and Connor Coolahan was hit by a pitch to force home another run.
Alex Iadisernia then bounced into a fielder's choice to drive home the fourth run, before Granatell scored on a double steal.
Delaware scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth when Joseph Carpenter led off with a double and scored one out later on a double by Aidan Kane.
Phoenix pitcher Brian Edgington fired a seven-inning complete game to earn the victory, allowing just one run on five hits with five strikeouts. Blue Hen starter Joey Silan took the loss after giving up five runs (two earned) on three hits in five innings, before Dom Velazquez tossed a pair of scoreless frames of relief.
In addition to the Carpenter and Kane doubles, Nick Vera recorded two singles and John Weglarz added one.
Elon struck first during the nightcap in the top of the third when Vergantino led off with a triple and scored on a groundout by Haskin.
Vergantino was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth, and after Haskin legged out a bunt single to drive home another run, Cole Reynolds scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-0 game.
The Blue Hens' best chance came in the bottom of the fifth when Vera singled and Jordan Hutchins doubled, but Iadisernia made a diving catch on a liner to center by Bryce Greenly to keep UD off the scoreboard.
Phoenix starter Shea Sprague fired five scoreless innings, before four Elon relievers allowed one combined hit in the final four frames. Delaware starter Zach Klapak gave up four runs in four innings, while Mike Biasiello then allowed just one hit and struck out four in four scoreless frames of relief.

"If you'd told me earlier today that our pitching was going to give up eight hits total, I'd have thought we won the doubleheader. So you can't blame the pitching. We had two innings where they didn't hit much but scored some runs anyway. We're just not going well offensively. We've kind of gone stale, and the boys have to find a way to stay alive and battle. We're one good game away from getting the ball rolling back in the right direction, so hopefully we can find that on Wednesday."
