Loynd’s Big Night Lifts Blue Hens Past Penn, 6-5

NEWARK, Del. – Joey Loynd hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth and Bryce Greenly recorded a game-ending strikeout with the bases loaded in the ninth as Delaware edged Penn, 6-5, Wednesday night at Bob Hannah Stadium.
With the game tied 4-4 in the eighth, Jake Dunion led off with a single and one out later Loynd launched a shot over the fence in leftcenter for his seventh longball of the year to put the Blue Hens in front.
Greenly took over on the mound in the ninth and retired the first two batters, but then allowed a pair of singles and an intentional walk to load the bases. Carson Ozmer then worked a free pass to force home a run, but Greenly recovered to strike out Craig Larsen on a checked swing on a full count to seal the victory.
Loynd recorded a triple and a homer while driving home four runs on the night, while Jordan Hutchins added two hits of his own. Nate Rolka earned his first win of the year after allowing one run in an inning of work, before Greenly picked up his second save.
Delaware opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Greenly walked, moved to second when Joseph Carpenter was hit by a pitch, and scored on a throwing error by Penn rightfielder Nate Polo. Following a walk to Aidan Kane, Loynd delivered a two-run triple to right to give the Blue Hens an early 3-0 lead.
The Quakers answered in the top of the third on a two-run single by Ben Miller, but Delaware got a run back in the bottom half as Kane doubled and came around to score when Loynd reached on an error.
Penn pulled within one in the seventh when Andrew Hernandez ripped an RBI double, while Wyatt Henseler drilled a solo homer in the eighth to make it a 4-4 game.

"The baseball gods weren't going to let us have an easy win. Injuries, tough breaks, losing games by one run – you name it, it's been happening to us the last few weeks, and it wasn't going to be an easy top of the ninth. But Greenly threw a great pitch on the final strike, and it was much needed. So we'll try to play a little better baseball down at William & Mary."
