NEWARK, Del. – Northeastern scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to break open a tie game as the Huskies defeated Delaware, 8-1, on the Blue Hens' Senior Day.
Northeastern advances to next week's CAA Tournament, while Delaware ends its season with a 25-26 record. The game also capped the remarkable careers of UD head coach Jim Sherman and associate head coach Dan Hammer.
Delaware, which won the first two games of the series to force Saturday's showdown for the final tournament spot, opened the scoring in the bottom of the third when Nick Vera led off with a walk, moved to third on a error and scored on an infield single by John Weglarz.
Mike Biasiello, making his first start of the season for the Blue Hens, retired the first 12 batters he faced before allowing a pair of doubles in the fifth. Luke Beckstein led off the frame with a double, and after moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, he scored on a double to right by Danny Crossen.
Delaware had a chance to immediately answer in the bottom half when the Blue Hens loaded the bases with one out, but NU starter Eric Yost struck out JJ Freeman and retired Joey Loynd on a flyout to escape the jam.
The Huskies then loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with one out, but Biasiello got Beckstein to bounce into a double play to keep the game tied.
However Northeastern took control by scoring seven runs on just two hits in the top of the eighth. After a walk and an error put the first two runners on base, Jeff Costello ripped a two-run double to put the Huskies in front. After two more runs scored on an error and a sacrifice fly, Buddy Mrowka capped the rally with a three-run homer.
Delaware got a single in the bottom of the eighth from Joseph Carpenter and one in the ninth from Jordan Hutchins, but could not push across a run in either frame.
Biasiello was outstanding in his final game as a Blue Hen, allowing just one run on three hits in six innings of work. He was one of seven players honored in a Senior Day pregame ceremony along with Hutchins, Weglarz, Matt Kennedy, Jose Ledesma, Austin Colmery and Chris Ludman.
Jim Sherman
"We played really good baseball for 26 of 27 innings this series, but the eighth inning today was the difference. I feel bad for our group because I thought they were deserving of being in the playoffs. We had some tough games in other series that we lost, but I respect them and will always remember that they could have thrown in the towel after last weekend. But they really battled, and it meant something to them, and to Delaware Baseball, and to me and Coach Hammer personally, that there was no quit in this group. So that's something I'm proud of.
"Lastly, I'm proud of the community, out administration, and all of the people who have supported me and given me well wishes this season. I'm a kid who played locally in high school, played college here and coached here; this place is dear to my heart. I'll always be a Blue Hen. Now my role will be as a supporter, and I'll always be here to help this program in the future."
