Grant Repeats, Six Blue Hens Earn Men’s Lacrosse All-CAA Honors

RICHMOND, Va. – For the second-straight season, the Delaware men's lacrosse team has six Blue Hens named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Team, announced Wednesday by the league office. Delaware's six honorees tied for a league-high with Towson.
Highlighting the postseason honors for the 2022 CAA Co-Champions is senior Owen Grant who repeats as the CAA Defensive Player of the Year. Grant was named the program's first-ever CAA Defensive Player of the Year last season. The Newmarket, Ontario native becomes the third player in league history to earn back-to-back honors and the first since 2013-2014. Delaware's all-time leader in caused turnovers led the way for Delaware with 26 this season to rank in the top 25 in the NCAA. He also scored five goals, including one from 50 yards out, in addition to aiding in three goals scored. The All-CAA First Team and Tewaaraton Award watch list defenseman had 36 ground balls, as he started every game for the Blue Hens in 2022.
Grant is joined on the All-CAA First Team by JP Ward. Four Blue Hens - Tye Kurtz, Mike Robinson, Joe Speers and Mark Bieda - were named to the All-Second Team.
Ward, the team's leading scorer, is tied for first in the CAA in overall points (52). He ranks tied for third in the CAA in points per game (3.71), second in game-winning goals (3), and tied for third in the CAA in assists (23). The sophomore from Owings Mills, Md. posted six hat tricks and had seven games with four or more points to earn the first All-CAA nod of his career. He had a season-best six-point outing twice, recorded seven games with two or more assists, and was a balanced scorer for the Blue Hens with 29 goals and 23 assists.
Kurtz picks up his second straight All-CAA Second Team nod. The senior from Puslinch, Ontario started every game he appeared in this season. He ranks first in the CAA in man-up goals per game (0.58) and second in the CAA in points per game (3.83). His nine-point outing tied for the league-high in a single game this spring, while his eight goals at Drexel are the most scored in the CAA this season and match the second-most in a single game in league history. He concluded the regular season with five hat tricks, including a membership to the 100 Goals Club.
Robinson, the CAA Rookie of the Year last season, earns all-conference recognition for the second-consecutive year after earning All-CAA First Team honors a year ago. He had another spectacular season as he tied for the most CAA Player of the Week honors this season with three. A 100 Point Club and 100 Goals Club member, the Peterborough, Ontario native had seven hat tricks this season. He leads UD and ranks 2nd in the CAA w/ 41 goals scored. Robinson has scored at least one point in every career game and had a season-high six goals and nine points in a single game.
Bieda, a senior midfielder from Bridgewater, N.J. for the Blue Hens, was a constant threat on offense this season. With the ability to score and feed the ball, he recorded two games with multiple goals and seven games with multiple assists. Bieda registered seven games with three or more points, including a season-high five points three times, as he ranks third in the CAA in assists per game (1.71).
Speers, an All-Rookie Team selection a year ago, picked up the first all-conference nod of his career. He excelled off the bench for Delaware. He caused at least one turnover in eight games. Speers, a native of Glenview, Ill., had only four turnovers this season. He scored on 2-of-3 shot attempts and tallied at least one point three times.
The Blue Hens open the CAA Tournament on Thursday, May 5 as the No. 1 seed with a semifinal game against Drexel at Vidas Field in Philadelphia.
