NEWARK, Del. – Former University of Delaware catcher John Schneider has been named interim manager for the Toronto Blue Jays, the club announced Wednesday.
Schneider, who takes over for Charlie Montoyo, will be the Blue Jays' interim manager for the remainder of the season.
Schneider has spent his entire coaching career with the Blue Jays organization, beginning as a catching instructor. In 2008 he was appointed hitting coach with the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays, before managing the team in 2009-10. He was the youngest manager in affiliated baseball at that time. Schneider was promoted to manage the Short Season A Vancouver Canadians in 2011 when he led the team to a Northwest League championship.
After returning to the GCL Blue Jays in 2012-13, Schneider again managed Vancouver the following two seasons. He served as manager of the Lansing Lugnuts in 2016, and the next year led the Dunedin Blue Jays to their first Florida State League championship in team history.
In 2018 Schneider was tabbed to manage the Double A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, and was named Eastern League Manager of the Year after leading the squad to the league championship.
Schneider was promoted to Toronto's major league staff prior to the 2019 season to work with the Blue Jays catchers, and took over as the squad's bench coach for the 2022 campaign.
Schneider, a native of Lawrenceville, N.J., was the Blue Hens' catcher for three seasons from 2000-02, appearing in 171 games with 175 hits, 118 runs scored, 51 doubles, 23 home runs and 139 RBI. He earned first team All-CAA and ABCA All-East honors in 2002 after leading the team with 15 doubles and 52 RBI while gunning down 29 runners attempting to steal.
Schneider was drafted in the 13th round of the 2002 MLB Draft by the Blue Jays. He played six seasons in Toronto's minor league system, reaching the Triple A level with the Syracuse SkyChiefs in 2003 and 2005-07.
Schneider becomes the third Blue Hen baseball player to manage in in the major leagues, along with Dallas Green (Philadelphia Phillies, 1979-81; New York Yankees, 1989; New York Mets, 1993-96) and Lee Elia (Chicago Cubs, 1982-83; Philadelphia Phillies, 1987-88).
