Blue Hens Open McMenemy Era With 2-0 Shutout of Mount St. Mary’s

NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware men's soccer team opened the Tommy McMenemy era with an impressive 2-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's in both teams' season opener Thursday night at Grant Stadium.

The Blue Hens opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when Carlos Fernandez dribbled down the right end line and sent a low cross to Seidu Shamsudeen, who fired a shot from close range into the net to put UD on the board.

Less than nine minutes latter Sam Donnellan collected a long feed from Florian Phlepsen and sent a shot into the bottom left corner of the cage from 18 yards out to make it a two-goal game.

The Blue Hens made the lead stand up the rest of the way, holding a commanding 15-5 advantage in shots. Blue Hen goalkeeper Adam Vik made two saves while posting the clean sheet in his UD debut.

"We're very excited. The boys worked incredibly hard on a hot night against a good team. I'm most pleased with the nature of the victory because that's what we want a Delaware performance to look like. We pinned them in and controlled the game for long periods, so I'm very happy with that. We'll just look to get a little sharper on the ball and create more dangerous opportunities for the amount of possession we had. But the boys have just worked so hard all of preseason and the returners worked hard all spring, so I'm just happy for them to get the shutout and that winning feeling again. Hopefully this gives us something to build on from here."
