Women’s Soccer Tangles With Virginia Tech
8/25/2022 9:02:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The University of Delaware women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 road decision Thursday evening to Virginia Tech (2-0-1) from Thompson Field in Blacksburg, Va.
"First I'd say hats off to Virginia Tech on a really good performance. They played their style well and caused us trouble quickly." said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "With that said, I was thrilled with our response coming out of halftime and, after making a few adjustments, thought we did a wonderful job growing into the game, creating some meaningful possessions and getting to some dangerous spots. I'm proud of the kids for their bravery and really competing in the second half."
After a scoreless opening half, Virginia Tech broke through in the 49th minute thanks to Lauren Gogal connecting with Taylor Price to slip one past Blue Hen goalie Mia Reed (1-1-1) to take the 1-0 lead.
The Hokies doubled its advantage in the 68th minute as Sophie Maltese buried the double assists from Natalie Mitchell and Emmalee McCarter.
The Blue Hens had three best attempts of getting in the scoring column with two shots coming off the foot of Maddie Schepers in the first and second half and Raychel Speicher's lone shot in the second period. Reed made a career-best nine saves in defeat.
Hokie netminder Lauren Hargrove (2-0-1) sent away two shots to claim her second victory on the young season.
Next up for Delaware is a matchup at Richmond (0-1-1) on Sunday, August 28 at 1 p.m. from President's Field at River Road in Richmond, Va.
