Volleyball Prevails in Five-Set Thriller Against Northeastern
9/18/2022 5:50:00 PM | Volleyball
NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball team was in a gauntlet CAA matchup Sunday afternoon against Northeastern (3-8, 0-2 CAA) inside Bob Carpenter Center. Behind a monster career-best 35-kill performance by Lani Mason, the Blue Hens (6-4, 2-0 CAA) prevailed in the five-set thriller (25-23, 21-25, 30-28, 16-25, 15-13) over the Huskies to keep their winning streaks alive (five matches, nine home winning streak).
Delaware's finest set came in set three, attacking at a rate of .360 before finishing the afternoon at a .152 clip, compared to Northeastern's .248. The Blue Hens led the way in aces (8-4) and digs while the Huskies held the edge in points (81-77), kills (64-61) and blocks (13-8). Both teams drew even with 61 assists apiece.
Northeastern opened the match with a 6-3 spurt. Delaware responded quickly with a 6-2 run of their own to take the 9-8 lead. The seesaw battle commenced as the set saw nine ties and four lead changes before the Blue Hens won the edge, thanks to a trio of Mason kills and Pearce Augier and Lily Rogers teaming up to send Laura Seeger's attack away, 25-23.
After the Huskies captured the 25-21 set two win and snapped the 13-straight set wins, the Blue Hens were determined to grab set three for themselves. The set proved to be another battle for the advantage where things seemed to favor Delaware after Lauryn Richardson buried Ezgi Basaranlar's kill, 23-20. Northeastern roared back with a vengeance, scoring four-unanswered points to claim set point, 24-23. Then the battle of wills started were both teams went back and forth capturing set point. With the scoreboard showing 28-all, Mason connected with Basarnlar for Delaware's set point before Eileen Gex dished out one to Savannah Seemans for the Blue Hens to secure the 30-28 set three win.
Determined and filled with grit, Northeastern pushed the match to five after scoring the last five points of the set to claim the 25-16 set four victory.
The deciding set wasn't short of any dramatics as Northeastern held the 8-5 lead to ignite the switching of the benches. Delaware watched the Huskies lead grow to four, 11-7, and with their backs against the wall, they refused to be frazzled. Leanna Deegan entered set five and kickstarted the most important 8-2 run of the afternoon, which was capped so elegantly by Mason's 35th kill of the afternoon to secure the 15-13 win.
Along with her 35-kill performance, Mason added 10 digs to her statline to post her fourth double-double on the season. Kirah Johnson followed with seven kills and six blocks as Richardson also finished with seven kills off the bench. Directing the Blue Hen offense was Basaranlar, dishing out a season-best 52 assists, to go along with eight digs. Anchoring the Delaware defense was the tag-team duo of Seemans and Gex, who both scooped up 16 and 12 digs respectively.
Erica Staunton paced Northeastern with 26 kills and 11 digs while Seeger chipped in 16 kills and seven digs. Jessica Frannea had 50 assists and Kayla Martin chipped in 24 digs.
