PRINCETON, NJ - The University of Delaware Women's Soccer team played its final non-conference match of the season at Princeton on Sunday night as they fell to Princeton, 1-0, at Sherrerd Field.
"Really tough match against a good Princeton team but I'm proud of the way our kids competed," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "We knew we'd be able to create a couple good chances and we did. The goals are going to come and we couldn't be more excited to start CAA play. A new season starts Thursday!"
The first half saw both teams maneuvering around the pitch keeping each other out of the box for the most part with Princeton recording nine shots to Delaware's four shots.
Princeton (5-3-0) scored in the 44th minute when Pietra Tordin scored from about five yards out after a double assist pulled Delaware goalkeeper Mia Reed far right, as Tordin aimed the ball in the far left side of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 edge and the eventual game-winner.
Reed made three saves in the first half for the Blue Hens in goal, as she finished with seven on the day. Reed exited the game late in the second half giving true freshman Odaliana Gomez her first appearance in goal this season. Gomez made two saves in 14 minutes guarding the net.
Delaware (1-5-3) finished the game with seven shots, as Princeton found a second gear in the second half firing off 18 shots.
Princeton held the edge in corner kicks, 10-1, while Ella Gantman picked up the win in the goal for the Tigers.
Next up for Delaware is the start of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. The Blue Hens will stay on the road as they head down south to play at UNCW (Sept. 18) and College of Charleston on Sunday (Sept. 22).
