WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Delaware women's soccer team had to sit through a lightning delay that lasted over an hour in Wilmington, before coming back on the pitch. The Blue Hens fell to UNCW, 1-0, in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener.
"We competed well away from home against a seasoned UNCW team but at the end of the day, the details matter," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. We need to learn that lesson fast to get a result on Sunday."
After a lightning delay stalled the game with 15:51 left in the first half and a 0-0 score, both teams came out of the locker rooms ready to compete.
It wasn't until the 71st minute that UNCW's Kayla Burroughs snuck the ball past Mia Reed and scored to the left side of the net for the eventual gamewinning goal.
Reed had one save on the night, while Sara D'Appolonia and Katie Hackley had two shots apiece.
UNCW edged Delaware in shots 10-6 and cornenr kicks 6-0
Delaware fell to 1-6-3 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. UNCW improved to 5-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.
