Gatorade SNIP Intern Right Here at UD

NEWARK, Del. - Delaware's James Burns was one of 10 students selected to participate in the illustrious Gatorade Sports Nutrition Immersion Program (SNIP). Â
A paid fellow Registered Dietitian through Gatorade at the University of Delaware, Burns works closely with Kelly Rossi, Director of Performance Nutrition. Burns is currently a registered dietitian.
"The Gatorade SNIP Program selects schools based on the expertise/reputation of their mentors, and the ability to provide an extremely high quality immersion for career development," said, Rossi. "Delaware was one of only 10 sites selected out of 40 mentor applicants. The mentor goes through a rigorous interview process, and competencies are developed to ensure the SNIP Fellow will come out of the immersion as a top candidate for any sports nutrition job. The other mentors chosen are at professional sports teams, power five schools, and professional training facilities, with UD being the only mid-major site chosen."Â
Rossi, as an interested mentor, had to submit an application including a detail on the duration of the immersion program, a description of interest in mentoring a SNIP fellow, a letter of support from a supervisor speaking to your mentoring and hosting abilities, a set of competencies that the fellow will accomplish while immersed in the program.
"I'm extremely proud to be one of only 10 Dietitians in the nation to be chosen for this fellowship opportunity," said Burns. "As a career changer during the pandemic, it took a lot of sacrifice and dedication through what were extremely uncertain times to accomplish these goals, and it is exciting to see the hard work paying off. It is an honor to represent the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association, Gatorade, and of course the Blue Hens!"
Burns had to submit an application including a description of career goals, description of professional work experience, cover letter, resume, and letter of recommendation in order to be considered.
"The goal of James' time with us is to provide him with a well-rounded experience in a Performance Nutrition department that provides high quality support to student athletes. This mentorship will allow him to be fully immersed in the daily workings of a Performance Nutrition department that collaborates very closely with all UD support staff, and works to mentor many undergrad students on their careers, while also assisting in the support of our athletes' fueling," Rossi said. " James' presence will also allow us to provide added support to our student-athletes and teams, assisting with menus for travel, individual counseling, team talks and other areas."
The Gatorade Sports Nutrition Immersion Program (SNIP) matches full-time sports dietitians with CPSDA members interested in getting more practical hands-on experience working with athletes and sports programs.
Each fellow will focus on career development under the mentorship of a host sports dietitian. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend. Working in cooperation with Gatorade, SNIP Program Managers match fellows through an in-depth application and review process. Mentor/Host-Sites also participate in an in-depth selection process conducted by a committee.

Why did this internship appeal to you?
Athletics can be a very competitive field to break into, especially straight out of graduate school. The Sports Nutrition Immersion Program fellowship appealed to me because in addition to offering the opportunity to gain hands-on experience as a Registered Dietitian at a Division 1 University, the program also allows me to be mentored by two excellent RD's, Kelly Rossi and Austin Mark. I have no doubt that wherever my career takes me, I'll be able to take everything I've learned during my time here as Blue Hen and utilize it to fuel athletes so that they can stay healthy and maximize their potential on and off the field.
