ROCK HILL, S.C. – The University of Delaware volleyball team opened Winthrop Tournament Friday morning with a showdown against Wyoming (1-6) inside Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, S.C. The Blue Hens (2-4) snapped its two game skid with a straight set victory (25-15, 25-11, 25-14) over the Cowboys.
"I'm proud that we came out aggressively and followed our game play throughout the match," said head coach Kimberly Lambert. "We were able to manage our errors well, without sacrificing our kills. Lani did an amazing job leading us offensively, but all of our hitters did an outstanding job. While Savannah didn't have the offensive match she would like, she was incredible defensively and passed well, which allowed us to hit .383 as a team."
Delaware finished the morning attacking at a rate of .383 compared to Wyoming's .085. The Blue Hens led the way in points (61-28), kills (42-22), aces (11-1), blocks (8-5), assists (40-20) and digs (42-21).
Delaware finest set came in the first set, swinging at a rate of .458. The Blue Hens opened the match with a 7-2 spurt, capped by Savannah Seemans finishing off Eileen Gex's feed. UD saw its lead balloon to 10 points after using a 6-2 run, 20-10, headlined by Ezgi Basaranlar serving three-straight points. Wyoming made a 22-15 match after Corin Carruth nailed one down before Mackenzie Sobczyk rose up and sent away Kasia Partyka's attempt for the Blue Hens to capture the 25-15 set one win.
After seeing the Cowboys hold the narrow 2-1 lead in the second set, the Blue Hens put together a dominating 16-3 spurt, capped by Lani Mason burying Seemans assists, to take the 17-5 lead. With Basaranalar serving, Delaware put together another 6-1 run to earn set point, 24-8. Wyoming scored three straight before Lily Rogers' kill gave the Blue Hens the 25-11 set two victory.
Set three proved to be a seesaw battle between both teams where Wyoming held the slim 8-7 advantage. Determined to pull away, Delaware went on a 9-2 run to hold the lead for good, 16-10. The Cowboys got in as close as five, 16-11, before Rogers' kill ignited a 9-3 Blue Hen run to capture the 25-14 set three win and completing the sweep.
Mason finished with a match-high 18 kills to go with six digs and two blocks. Rogers followed with eight kills and three digs while Kirah Johnson added seven kills and match-best four blocks.
