Volleyball Match Preview: Wyoming, Winthrop & Davidson

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball team returns to action this weekend, competing in the Winthrop Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C. The Blue Hens will open tournament play on Friday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. against Wyoming, followed by facing the hosts Winthrop later on at 4:30 p.m. UD will close out the tournament against Davidson on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. All matches will take place inside Winthrop Coliseum.

What You Need to Know:

Delaware will be meeting Wyoming for the first time and meeting Winthrop and Davidson for the second time in program history. It has been 34 years since the Blue Hens and the Eagles faced off, with Winthrop holding the 1-0 all-time record. Delaware's last meeting with Davidson dates back to 1991 when the Wildcats hold a 1-0 record over the Blue Hens.
Wyoming will enter the tournament with a 1-5 record on the young season and their last time out was against Grand Canyon on Sept. 3, where the Antelopes captured the four-set win over the Cowboys.
Winthrop are 2-4 on the season and their last time out was on Sept. 3 against UNCW where the Eagles claimed the straight-set victory.
The Wildcats are 4-2 on the season, dropping their last match on Sept. 3 to New Mexico in four sets, which snapped their four-game winning streak.
Delaware's last time out was on Sept. 4 against UMBC. The Blue Hens suffered a heartbreaking five-set loss to the Retrievers, dropping to a 1-4 record on the season.
The statline against UMBC: Lani Mason finished the afternoon with a career-best 31 kills to go along with 15 digs, four blocks and two aces to post her third double-double of the season. Savannah Seemans followed with eight kills and 11 digs while Kirah Johnson added eight kills and career-best 12 blocks. Ezgi Basaranlar dished out 50 assists while Eileen Gex scooped up 15 digs.

Up Next: Delaware returns to campus and will welcome Northeastern for a weekend series Saturday, Sept. 17 and Sunday, Sept. 18 to open CAA play. Both matches are slated for a 2 p.m. start inside Bob Carpenter Center.
