1/16/2023 8:10:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BOSTON – A sizable rebounding margin hurt Delaware men's basketball (10-9, 2-4 CAA) on Monday evening as the Blue Hens fell to Northeastern (7-10, 3-3 CAA), 59-58, in the final few seconds.
With a 7-7 tie, the Blue Hens ripped off a 9-0 run over 2:38 to pull ahead 16-7 with 12:27 left in the first. An 11-6 margin, including a 10-2 advantage at one point put the Hens up 27-13 with less than seven minutes to play in the opening period. Delaware would finish the stanza up 34-22.
The Blue Hens used five triples in the first half to widen that gap, while holding Northeastern to just 35-percent overall from the floor, including 11-percent from deep. UD was 5-of-8 from long range in the period and 11-of-24 overall. Delaware led the turnover battle at +8 at the break, while the Huskies held a +11 margin in rebounds.
The home team outpaced the Hens 15-9 up to the 11:29 mark of the second to pull within six at 43-37. Northeastern would pull within two points at 48-46 before Delaware regained a multi-possession lead, 54-46. Northeastern made it a one-point game with 14 seconds left and hit the game-winning bucket with three seconds on the clock. A costly turnover put the Hens on the defensive and forced to foul. UD got the rebound on the first shot of the one-and-one, but a half court heave didn't connect.
Delaware finished outshooting the home team 42.9 percent to 40.0 percent, including 50.0 percent from deep to 36.8 percent.
Ultimately, the +26-rebounding margin proved to be the difference for the Huskies as they turned 20 offensive rebounds into 22 second-chance points.
Jyáre Davis led all players with 17 points on a 7-of-14 outing. He was joined in double figures by Ebby Asamoah (14) and LJ Owens (10).
Delaware returns home to take on William & Mary on Thursday.
