Mendoza, Garber Ranked in Extra Elite 100 Position Rankings

NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware softball infielders Brittney Mendoza and Hanna Garber have each been recognized by Extra Inning Softball in the 2023 Extra Elite College Position Rankings. Mendoza was ranked 18th among Division I second baseman, while Garber slid in at No. 17 among third baseman.
Mendoza is coming off a great 2022 season where she earned All-CAA First Team honors, her second-straight year on the all-conference team after being named to the All-CAA Second Team in 2021. She batted .331 with 33 RBI in 45 games to rank second on the Blue Hens in both categories while tying for the team lead with 12 doubles. The Chula Vista, California native hit five home runs to go along with a triple and was a perfect 8-for-8 in stolen bases. Entering her fifth season with the Blue & Gold, Mendoza has started in all 153 career games and is currently in the top five in program history in runs scored (103), doubles (38), home runs (23) and RBI (121).
Garber put together one of the best seasons in Delaware history, earning All-CAA First Team as well as NFCA All-Northeast Region First Team honors. She led the Blue Hens with a .359 batting average and 23 extra-base hits, including eight home runs, 10 doubles and a team-high five triples. On the base paths, Garber stole 16 bases and she led the CAA with 48 runs scored. The Lancaster, Pennsylvania native becomes Delaware's first CAA Defensive Player of the Year in her first season at third base after playing the last three seasons in the outfield. She committed just three errors on the season while starting all 45 games and handling 129 chances. She enters 2023 already among the program's top players in hits (170), runs scored (129), doubles (25), triples (19) and stolen bases (72).
Delaware finished the 2022 season with a 29-16 overall record and went 11-4 in conference play, winning the program's first-ever CAA Regular Season Championship. The Blue Hens will open the 2023 season the weekend of February 10-12 when the squad travels to Houston to play in the 2023 Bearkat Classic, hosted by Sam Houston State, as well as the Houston Invitational.
